Mind Your Midriff: The Best Weighted Shorts, Pants, & Belts

Best Weighted Belt, Shorts, Pants Intro ImageWeighted clothes for the lower body are an excellent addition to any fitness regimen. Whether you’re just getting started with weighted clothing or you’re more experienced, you’ll find that weighted shorts, weighted pants, and weighted belts can offer distinct health benefits that other equipment can’t.

When I was brainstorming about my next article to add to BestHealthGear, I noticed that while I’ve covered many types of upper body weighted clothing (including weighted vests and weighted shirts), we’ve totally ignored lower body weighted clothing! Although lower body weighted clothing is less common than upper body, that doesn’t mean it’s any less effective. Read on to learn more about lower body weighted clothing and see our favorite weighted shorts and weighted belts out there!

The Best Weighted Shorts / Weighted Pants

Weighted shorts, also sometimes called weighted pants, are becoming increasingly popular in the world of weighted clothes. Athletes wear these shorts to increase resistance when working out their hip flexors, glutes, knee joints, & quads. The two most popular brands for weighted shorts are MIR and TITIN. You may recognize MIR and TITIN from our other articles – some of our favorite weighted upper body clothes come from these brands.

Weighted shorts can help you build up a more powerful lower body (think thighs, calves, and hips). When choosing weighted shorts, make sure they’re as form-fitting as possible yet still adjustable. Whether you’re running, jogging, doing squats, or jumping, you’ll be doing some intense movement in your weighted shorts, so quality research is key.

Here are a few of our favorite weighted shorts we know you’ll love:

#1 – MIR Weighted Shorts (adjustable, max weight: 45 lbs)

Picture of MIR Weighted Shorts

MIR Adjustable Weighted Shorts are our favorite weighted pants on the market because at the time of writing, they are one of the few weighted shorts that are fully weight-adjustable (meaning you can add/remove weights). While the MIR Weighted Shorts all have a max weight of 45 lbs, you can choose to buy the shorts with only 20 lbs of weight, or the full 45 lbs of weight. Note that the weight is adjustable in 3 lb increments. MIR has a sterling reputation in the weighted clothing community because their rugged products last the test of time. These shorts are great because whereas other shorts have full compression, these are free-breathing. That means you’ll stay comfortable all the way to the end of your workout.

#2 – Fighting Sports Power Weighted Shorts (adjustable, max weight: 20 lbs)

Picture of Fighting Sports Power Weighted Shorts

Fighting Sports Power Weighted Shorts are durable neoprene adjustable weighted pants that can carry a max of 20 lbs. They check all the boxes for being well-made, form-fitting, and adjustable, but they do run small, so buy these pants at a size larger than you’re used to. During our testing, we noticed that the weights are placed such that they kind of rub against the inside of your thighs when running – very uncomfortable. Thankfully, removing the inner-thigh weights fixed the problem. Fighting Sports Power provides a good alternative to the MIR weighted shorts, but it’s a noticeable step down in my opinion.

The Best Weighted Belt

Athletes wear padded weighted belts around their waist to introduce additional resistance to their lower body workouts. The best weighted belt will always be adjustable, both at the waistline and in the amount of weight attached. One of the key benefits of weighted belts is that they don’t restrict natural body movement, which can be a problem with vests. That said, they can get in the way during an abdominal workout.

#1 – All Pro Weight Adjustable Power Stride Exercise Belt (adjustable to 10 lbs)

Picture of All Pro Weighted Belt

The All Pro Weight Adjustable Power Stride Exercise Belt (10 Lbs) is a fully adjustable weight belt ideal for walking, jogging, and other light cardio. If you have any experience with weighted clothing, you know how frustrating leaky sand and gel weights can be. All Pro’s weights are made of solid iron, which is a huge benefit that ensures long-lasting durability. This weighted belt is super comfortable, with soft padding along the waist and lower back. This belt allows for a full range of motion. The only downside is that this belt maxes out at 10 lbs; if you want more weight, check out the two belts we reviewed below.

#2 – MiR Champion Adjustable Weighted Belt (adjustable to 36 lbs)

Picture of the MiR Champion Weighted BeltThe MiR Champion Adjustable Weighted Belt is our top choice for guys who want to intensify their resistance training. Women should steer clear of this one, as the waist is too big to fit most people, but this is a solid choice for bigger guys. I’m a 36 inch waist and it fit perfectly. I had a few friends try it as well, one was a 30 inch waist, another was a 42 inch waist – both felt it fit properly. We have reviewed tons of MiR equipment on this site, and have always given their gear high marks for construction, durability, and function. This belt is no different, with a max weight of 36 lbs and adjustable in 3 lb increments.

#3 – Power Systems VersaFit Adjustable Belt (adjustable to 20 lbs)

Picture of Power Systems VersaFit Adjustable Weighted Belt

The Power Systems VersaFit Adjustable Weighted Belt comes with 20 lbs of weights in 2 lb increments, and is wearable for people with waists between 30 to 46 inches. We like VersaFit’s weight belt because the waist construction is the best we have ever seen. You can kind of see from the picture that it’s a thick, high surface area belt. There’s NO slippage and NO jiggling. One downside to this belt is that the adjustable weights (2 lb increments) are made of sand, and if you’ve ever dealt with sand weights, you know they tend to leak a bit.

Why Should You Invest in Weighted Belts & Weighted Shorts?

So you’ve seen some of our favorite weighted shorts and belts, but why is this equipment a good investment for you? For lower body strength training, wearing adjustable weights around your midsection is an efficient, comfortable (but not fashionable!) way to intensify activities like squats, sprints, jumping, and jogging.

You should consider the below factors when choosing the best weighted belts and shorts for your needs:

  • How Much Weight Do You Need?: As you can see in the options above, weighted shorts and belts come in various sizes and weight limits. Do you only need a little boost in your workouts, or a bigger punch? At, we recommend going with a higher weight limit if you’re not sure what you need. There’s no shame in getting a 30 lb belt and taking out 20 lbs!
  • Adjustable Weights: Our list exclusively features adjustable weighted shorts and belts. We would never recommend buying weighted shorts/belts that don’t allow you to add or remove weights — it wouldn’t be a smart investment.
  • Fit: Does your weighted belt or pair of weighted shorts fit snugly around your waist? There’s nothing worse when doing rapid lower body exercises than having equipment that doesn’t fit properly chafing your body or jiggling. This is probably the most important consideration yet one of the hardest to predict. Don’t be afraid to return a model if it doesn’t fit just right for you.

Final Thoughts

Always take safety precautions when testing out new equipment. Your body is your temple, so start at lower weight configurations and increase from there when you’re comfortable.

Like we always say, please consult your trainer or sports doctor if you have any pain. Feel free to shoot us a note if you have any comments!
